Paula Santa Maria '24 spent part of her summer volunteering at Santa Rosa National Park, part of Guanacaste Conservation Area in Costa Rica, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. During her time there, she welcomed and assisted visitors, provided information about the park’s natural and cultural resources, and supported the staff in organizing and managing daily activities. Working in this unique environment allowed her to strengthen her communication, leadership, organizational, and teamwork skills while developing a deeper appreciation for environmental conservation and the preservation of cultural heritage. The experience also gave her the opportunity to interact with people from different backgrounds and understand the importance of protecting places of global significance.
Paula says that her time at Santa Rosa National Park became a meaningful experience that broadened her perspective and strengthened her sense of responsibility toward her community and the environment.
Paula is studying Global Health and Anthropology at Mercer University.
