Get to Know: Coach Erin McGraw

In our continuing “get to know” series, this week, we interview Coach Erin McGraw, Pinecrest’s Middle School and Varsity Tennis Head Coach.
What sport do you coach at Pinecrest and how long have you been coaching this sport?

I serve as the Middle School and Varsity Tennis Head Coach.  This is my sixteen overall season coaching tennis at Pinecrest, starting with the Middle School in 2008 and the Varsity in 2016.

Tell us about your background in this particular sport.

I began playing tennis as a child, taking lessons and participating in summer camps. I went on to play #1 doubles for the Newnan High School Varsity Team, then played doubles for NCAA Division II Converse College during my Senior year.  I have continued to play as an adult, but I have focused more on coaching.

What are some career highlights during your time as an athlete and/or coach?

2016 Pinecrest Varsity Boys first GHSA State Playoffs - Sweet 16
2016 Pinecrest Varsity Girls team GHSA - Elite 8
2018 GHSA Region Tournament - Boys Team (Finished 3rd in Sub-region)
2021 GHSA State Playoffs - 1st Round

How do you inspire the mission of Pinecrest Academy in your players?

The Pinecrest Tennis Team provides an opportunity for players to put into action the lessons and virtues they learn each day, being Christian leaders in society. Our coaching staff encourages our players to value and cultivate their God-given talents with commitment and hard work. We encourage players to go beyond their tennis skills and be kind and respectful to teammates, opponents, coaches, and fans.

As your student-athletes continue along in their sport, what is the primary lesson you hope they’ll leave Pinecrest with, as it relates to being one of your players?

I hope our players develop a love for the sport of tennis that they will continue to cultivate for a lifetime. Tennis is truly a sport that you can play at any age and any level. The greatest success for our coaching staff is seeing our former players continuing to get on the court long past their days at Pinecrest.

Are there any coaches or fellow teammates who inspired you as an athlete yourself?

I’m truly inspired by our team members. With each season comes new challenges and experiences. Our team members have a love and zeal for the game that is contagious. Their excitement to be on the court each afternoon, to challenge themselves and grow, to support each other, and to bring joy to the sport is inspiring. I also am fortunate to witness so much growth in each team member, both as a player and person. It is an honor to be part of their journeys.

When you’re not coaching or teaching, what do you like to do in your free time?

As the Fine Arts Director, I spend a lot of my time working on projects related to our musical productions and Fine Arts events.  Beyond that, I love spending time with my family, friends, and my dog, Lilo. I enjoy game nights, cooking and grilling, crafts, and more.

Is there anything people would be surprised to know about you?

I am a classically-trained opera singer with my Bachelors and Master’s degrees in Voice Performance.
