Middle School Girls Soccer Wins State Championship
Middle School Girls Soccer brought home the Georgia State Championship after an impressive 2023 season!
The team had an exceptional group of girls, with a powerful combination of experience and newly acquired skills. The team consisted of 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th graders who brought expertise and new talent to the field. The 7th graders showed significant growth in their skill level as the season progressed, especially in ball protection and making passes to open players.
The team's impressive decision-making abilities and ball possession skills were unparalleled, causing difficulty for opponents to even cross the half field line. The team's collaborative approach was focused on ensuring every girl had opportunities to contribute. Once the team had a comfortable lead, they strategically passed the ball around, maintaining control of the game, and allowing everyone valuable game time experience throughout the season.
Overall, the team's collective effort and talent proved to be a force to be reckoned with, leaving an impressive mark on the season with 12 wins and only two losses.
The State Championship game was played in honor of Coach Q, who had been the Middle School coach for many years. The players wore gold Q’s on their jerseys in his memory. The Girls went on to win 5-1 vs The King's Academy on April 28.
“This was my first season as coach of the Middle School Girls Soccer team, and I feel the role of athletics at the middle school level is to help students learn new skills, understand how to function in a team environment, and understand the role of a team and one’s responsibility to the team; and this team excelled in all those attributes,” commented Coach Richard Langton. “This was such a rewarding experience for all, and I can’t wait to see what next season brings.”
“Mr. Langton jumped into this opportunity to not only help our soccer program, but to organize and train both the Girls and Boys Middle School teams, coaching them to the playoffs and then ultimately winning the State Championship with the Girls team,” said Coach Dom Martelli.
Said Coach Brooks Binkley, “Watching these students play their games, and eventually getting to hoist the Girls’ State Championship trophy, will be memories I take with me throughout my coaching career.”
