Metz Becomes All Time Leading Scorer & Surpasses 2000 Points!

The Pinecrest Varsity Girls Basketball team took on Region and State power, St. Francis, on Wednesday, February 8th. This is a common occurrence every basketball season; in fact, the teams are used to playing each other at least twice during the season.

But February 8th had the potential to be a special day for not only the Pinecrest Basketball program but also for the Pinecrest Athletic Department. Current Senior Mary Margaret Metz had scored 1861 points in her career up to that night. Her older brother Mike, who graduated in 2007, held the school record for points in a career at 1864 points. Little sis was only four points from breaking his record!

So the game began and the stands were packed with students to see MM bring down the record. But St. Francis can  be very prideful, and with five Division I commits, they gave the Paladins all they could handle. Stanford commit Maya Dodson made life miserable for the team, especially Mary Margaret.
After making two foul shots, and with 2:37 left in the 2nd quarter, Mary Margaret found a seam and was able to get position under the basket. Her contested shot banked off the backboard and the record was all hers.

But the season wasn’t finished and neither was Mary Margaret. The Lady Paladins marched into the Region Tournament with the hope of seeing their old friends again, this time in the Region Championship – a first for the program since entering GHSA.

Although the Knights of St. Francis took home the trophy, Metz would go on to drop 21 against the #1 team in Georgia and pass a mark that only two other Forsyth County basketball players have accomplished, both currently on the roster for the University of Maryland Women’s team!

Mary Margaret Metz is not finished! With the State Playoffs right around the corner, she should be able to add to her current total of 2006. The first opportunity she and her teammates will have to continue their momentum will be this Friday, when the Lady Paladins host the 1st Round of the GHSA Playoffs against the Hornets of Savannah Country Day. Tip off will be at 4:30pm in the Upper School Gym, and tickets are $7.

Go Paladins!
