Art is integrated into our students’ learning objectives in PreK. Art strengthens visual discrimination, visual acuity, fine motor skills, and eye-hand coordination and is used to visually reinforce concepts in phonics, science, and social studies. All students have art class one to two times per week and are able to explore a variety of thinking processes, art forms, materials and techniques. They use memory, imagination and observation skills when creating art forms. Creative problem solving is encouraged, as students envision, design and create their own compositions. Skill development leading toward good craftsmanship is practiced and encouraged. An understanding of the role that art plays in the world and in history is touched on. Students experience a variety of media such as chalk pastels, oil pastels, painting with watercolor and tempera, ceramics, paper mache and more. Every year, Pinecrest students participate in the Sawnee Women's Club Art Contest.
Music & Performing Arts
Lower School Music is a busy place! PreK students have music class once a week, while kindergarten through 5th grade students enjoy music class twice a week. Students learn the fundamentals of beat, rhythm, melody, harmony, form and texture, as well as the expressive elements of music making. Students sing, listen, move, play instruments, work on reading and writing music through a variety of musical repertoire, including folk songs of different cultures, works of the great composers, sacred music, choral pieces and camp songs (to name a few). Students practice, perform and evaluate their work, and do all these things in a spirit of excellence and teamwork. Students participate in a Christmas and Spring Festival of the Arts, and each grade level performs a concert or musical theater production every year. Performance allows the student's unique artistic talents to shine and builds confidence.
Students in the Lower School can begin discovering their musical talents early! The Lower School offers a beginning band for 4th grade students who have no previous experience or knowledge of music, and an intermediate band for students in their second year of band. Instruments offered include flute, oboe, clarinet, bass clarinet, bassoon, saxophones (alto, tenor, baritone), trumpet, french horn, trombone, euphonium, tuba, and percussion. Band is a year-long course that meets two times a week, and both beginning and intermediate band perform at least two concerts during the school year. Students also have the opportunity to participate and perform in the annual Dessert Concert, which features individual and small ensemble performances. Additionally, private lessons are offered on campus through the Ascension Music Academy.
