The long-awaited turf field is coming to fruition, thanks to the generosity and dedication of many members of the Pinecrest Academy community. The Pinecrest Athletic Club, was vital in helping to procure donations that have made this project possible.

The turf install project officially began on Monday, May 20, 2019, as engineers from Pinnacle Design/Build Group and Deluxe Athletics began to measure and conduct site preparation.

Sod removal will begin soon, and installation of the turf will be in full-swing during the summer months. Plans are to unveil the new Turf Field for the first Paladins home Football game on Friday, September 13, 2019.

  • Turf Install Project Begins May 20!

Thanks to the generosity and dedication of many members of our Pinecrest Academy community, our long-awaited Turf Athletic Field is about to become a reality!

The Turf Install Project will officially begin on Monday, May 20, as engineers from Pinnacle Design/Build Group and Deluxe Athletics measure and conduct site preparation.

Sod removal will begin shortly thereafter, and installation of the turf will be in full-swing as we enter the summer. Plans are to unveil the new Turf Field for the first Paladins home Football game!

We are excited to make this transition from sod to turf for several reasons:
    • It will be the first major improvement project in over ten years for our Athletic program
    • Having a turf field will solve programmatic problems, like scheduling conflicts, due to weather that has traditionally affected the use of our sodded field
    • We’ll realize a significant savings in maintenance costs, time, set-up, and field lining
    • The cost savings from maintaining a turf field instead of grass can be diverted back to academics
We will keep you updated on the Turf Installation Project as it begins and throughout the summer, all the way through completion.

More than anything, the generosity from our amazing community benefits the children we serve here. Some of our students shared their gratitude in a “thank you” video. View it HERE.

  • Swimmers Support Deployed Alumni with Care Packages

Mrs. Jordan’s swimmers are showing support for two of their own. Pinecrest alums, Patrick Carroll ’15 and Michael Denkman ’17, also former PA swimmers, are currently stationed in two different military locations overseas.

Thanks to generous donations from many Pinecrest families, our swimmers sent care packages to Michael and Patrick on March 8 and then again on April 22. Mrs. Jordan and the Swim Teams will be mailing the last of the care packages in May - to spread out the love over time!

Here is a portion of a message from Mrs. Carroll, sent to Mrs. Jordan after the first care packages were mailed:

"Patrick has returned to original camp. He was involved in a dangerous mission just a few days ago... But prayers are heard, he is well, and back to what I think is a “more boring” peaceful place. You understand how much we appreciate prayers. I want these two boys back home safe, but most importantly, closer to God... Love to you, thank you so, so much to you and the whole swim team."

We ask our Pinecrest community to keep up the prayers for Michael, Patrick, and their troops, until all safely return home.

  • Kane Alvarez Del Pino Named "Most Positive Boys Soccer Athlete"

Senior Kane Alvarez Del Pino has been named the Most Positive Boys Soccer Athlete in North Atlanta by Positive Athlete Georgia. He is also one of the regional award winners in this year’s Positive Athlete Georgia program.

Over 5,400 student-athletes and coaches from over 415 high schools in Georgia were nominated this year, and only about 7% of those nominees will be recognized as regional winners. This makes Kane one of the best of the best, according to Positive Athlete Georgia!

As a regional award winner, Kane is also eligible to potentially win one of Positive Athlete’s statewide awards and college scholarships. These statewide award winners will be announced in early May, and will be invited to attend the 2019 Georgia Positive Athlete Awards on June 4.

Kane has also been identified as a Finalist for the Northside Hospital "Leadership Award". This means that he has been identified as one of the most qualified athletes in our region for this award. This is a $1,000 scholarship that will be awarded to one of the Positive Athlete nominees in the region. The award will be decided on within the next few weeks.

  • Annual Night of the Roasting Pigs – April 27

The annual Night of the Roasting Pigs is on Saturday, April 27, beginning at 5pm.

According to the "Flying Pigs Society," the Pig Roast is an over age 21, manly-man event, for ALL Pinecrest dads and their friends. It kicks off at 5pm with a Mass in Our Lady of Guadelupe Chapel. The pig roasting teams then head to the football field parking lot for an evening of roasting, toasting, and boasting about your manly-man, meat cooking abilities. Your inner swine will shine while you enjoy the company of the other dads, while having beverages and playing games like football or soccer or other feats of manliness.

    Pig Roast Q & A

    How do I participate?
You gather a group of friends and cook a pig, boar, lamb, gator or any type of meat you particularly enjoy. You can grill out and share food that evening with the other participants or you can go Whole Hog and roast a pig to be shared at the Family PigNic on Sunday.

Do I have to cook to come?
NO. You can still get your pig groove on by attending the event and getting to know the other dads.

    Is this an overnight event?
Yes and No. It is an overnight event if you are manly enough to handle it. Otherwise, you stay until you have had all of the fun you can handle for the night.

Do I need money to attend?
YES. This is a fundraiser for athletics. You will need money to purchase a t-shirt and cigar when you arrive. Typically around $20-$25. Larger donation amounts are encouraged.

What can I bring to help?
You can bring things that other participants will enjoy and will help you make friends. Have an awesome bourbon? Have a portable arcade game? Have some fun tailgate games? All of these things will draw others to you and help you make some fine swine friends.

Who do I contact to get a pig or ask questions?
The Head Hog is Bill Brown. You can contact him at mrwcbrown@att.net.

  • JV Boys Soccer Takes Down Cambridge 2-1

The JV Boys Soccer team enjoyed a win against the 6A Cambridge High School on Wednesday, March 13. Here is a summary of all the soccer action, broken out by half.

    First half summary (4-4-2 formation)

    Goalkeeper: Evan Kane
Defenders: Miles Brajdic, Harry Wang, Lewis Diaz, Nick Figueredo
Midfielder: Preston Jeans, Mark Metz, Nicholas Arribasplata, Dylan Dennis
Forwards: Sebastian Santa Maria, Nick Bohn

Pinecrest started with the right spirit, sending the ball to the opponent’s side and keeping it there. On minute 5, after a poor clear from Cambridge, Nick Bohn got to the ball, and as he was tackled on the box, he toe-poked the ball past Cambridge’s keeper, making the score 1-0.

Pinecrest made a lot of good runs with Sebastian Santa Maria, but failing to convert on the final third. Towards the end of the half, Cambridge looked very dangerous, but every opportunity of goal was shut down by the Paladins defense and Evan Kane, who kept a clean sheet during the first half.

    Second half (4-5-1 formation)

    Goalkeeper: Grayson Thomason
Defenders: Elias Maalouf, Harry Wang, Preston Jeans, Nick Figueredo
Midfielders: Ernesto Solera, Kyle Adams (Tripp Hochman), Mark Metz, Lewis Diaz, Dylan Dennis
    Forward: Nick Bohn

At the end of the first half, Cambridge was dominating the midfield and making dangerous runs in the Paladins’ back line. Pinecrest switched formation, allowing Mark Metz to sit in front of the defense, and also allowing PA’s outside mid to make more runs and get crosses into the box.
Pinecrest defended most of the half, with very little possession time. Goalkeeper Grayson Thomason kept Pinecrest in the game by making a pair of important saves. Two minutes before the end of the game, Nick Bohn received the ball in midfield, carried if forward, and hit a great strike for outside of the 18, beating Cambridge’s goal keeper. Cambridge scored their goal a minute later.

Pinecrest showed a lot of discipline in the back, which ultimately was the key to the 2-1 victory.

    Noteworthy players:

    Nick Bohn (2 goals)
Miles Bradjic: many important tackles and covering Cambridge’s most skilled and fastest player on the edge (Miles would come out in the beginning of the second-half, after going through the concussion protocol)
Goalkeepers: Evan Kane and Grayson Thomason: multiple saves throughout the game
Mark Metz with his defensive effort in the midfield.

  • Former Olympian Visits Wresting Team

The Pinecrest Wrestling program received some extra special motivation this week from former Olympian Stanley Dziedzic, who spoke to our Paladin Wrestlers. Mr. Dziedzic was a Bronze Medalist in the 1976 Olympics and World Champion in 1977. While a collegiate wrestler at Slippery Rock from 1970-1972, Mr. Dziedzic won three NCAA College Championships and had 118 victories and only two defeats.

The information Mr. Dziedzic shared with our wrestlers will prove to be very valuable as the Varsity Wrestling team heads into state qualifiers.  Good luck, guys!
