High School Attendance Policy Print E-mail

Daily Attendance

Regular and punctual attendance at school is mandatory. However, the following situations may qualify as excused absence:

  1. Student illness
  2. Death in the family
  3. Family illness which makes attendance impossible
  4. Emergency
  5. Participation in a school-sponsored event
  6. Medical or dental appointments
  7. Other events which have been pre-approved by the school

In case of an excused absence, a parent or guardian must notify the school via email before 8:30 AM. ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. ).

To have any absence pre-approved, it must be submitted in writing to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. a minimum of 3 days prior to the date of the excused absence.

Students have one day to make up any missed work for each day missed due to an excused absence.

Pinecrest Academy has a "closed campus" policy. Students may not leave the school campus until the school day has officially ended. Violators will earn an automatic suspension.

Failure to comply with the process for reporting absences may result in an absence being recorded as unexcused.

Repeated incidences of unexcused absence (truancy) may result in denial of credit for a course, suspension, or expulsion at the school's discretion. Students absent from school will not be allowed to participate in after-school events on that day, including sporting events.

Each student will be allowed a maximum of ten absences (5 per semester) from any class during the academic year, including both excused and unexcused absences. In cases where this number is exceeded, a determination of eligibility to receive credit will be made by administration based on input from the teacher(s) and the counselor.

Unexcused Absence

Although the school recognizes the right of parents/guardians to take their student out of school for personal reasons, Pinecrest retains the right not to recognize all parent authorized absences as excused. Parents are asked to schedule appointments, community service opportunities, and/or family vacations during non-school hours whenever possible. Trips and activities that take students out of school are discouraged. Pinecrest Academy High School considers the following reasons to be unexcused:

  • Absence without a call or a note
  • Truancy/Skipping: The absence from school for all or any part of the day without a valid reason as outlined above for excused absences, or from a class without the teacher's consent. Violations will result in an automatic suspension
  • Staying home from school in order to prepare for or recuperate from an event
  • Leaving campus without proper permission. Violations will result in an automatic suspension
  • Suspension

A student is considered not in good standing for that particular day with all privileges revoked. Students will receive a grade of zero for all work missed due to an unexcused absence.

Tardy Policy

Attendance is taken during the homeroom period each day at 7:45. Students arriving after the 7:45 bell will be recorded as tardy. If tardy for homeroom, the student should report immediately to homeroom. If tardy for 1st-7th periods, the student should take their note to the front desk of the building or to the Dean of Students for validation and approval, and then report to class with their note. If a student does not have a validated note, they will be marked tardy unexcused.

NOTE: Every six unexcused tardies for any class constitute an absence. An accumulation of unexcused tardies will lead to consequences in the same manner as absences (as described above)

A student who is unexcused tardy for a class must check in with the Dean the next morning at 6:55 AM. Any student who fails to do will be required to serve Dean Duty after school from 3:30 – 4:40. If 6:55 the next morning is not possible due to extenuating circumstances, Dean Duty will be served the next logical day.

A student who is marked "not in class" for a reason other than being absent is responsible for verifying their excused reason with the Dean. Failure to do so will result in Dean Duty.
