Catholic Formation

This course focuses on the revelation of the Catholic faith from the moment of creation through salvation history and into the founding of the early Church.  The students will gain a basic knowledge of major biblical figures such as Abraham, Joseph, Moses and John the Baptist.  Students will also study and reflect upon the life and ministry of Jesus and the teachings of the apostles.

Language Arts

A sound knowledge of grammar, the ability to read, analyze and appreciate good literature, and the ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing comprise the foundation of the English Language Arts program.  In all grades, essential skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing for:

  • Information and understanding

  • Literary response and expression

  • Analysis and evaluation

  • Communication and social interaction

Algebra I

Although mathematics is essential in science, engineering, and finance, all students must develop “the ability to understand the value of quantitative information, to conceptualize problems, and to organize and interpret data in useful ways.”  In Algebra I students begin to solve “effective, authentic problems.  In solving such problems students learn to ask, “What mathematics do I need now?”  The study of algebra through problems from the real world provides students with the opportunity to apply their knowledge of mathematics and their skills in solving problems.

Physical Science

Physical Science is divided into two main strands: chemistry and physics.  During this one-year course, students will develop their physical knowledge and understanding of:

  • The nature of energy, its transfer and control

  • The range of energy sources and the issues involved in their exploitation

  • The nature and application of forces

  • Electric and electromagnetic effects in simple circuits, electric and domestic appliances

  • The properties and behavior of sound and light

World Geography

Students will study world geography as a year-long course in preparation for a two-year world history study in high school.  This course covers the physical landforms, natural environments, economic activates and social-cultural events which impact and change people and places.  The course involves the acquisition of factual knowledge and the development of skills in data analyses through maps, charts, diagrams and numerical facts.  Students will be expected to learn and develop extended writing skills, competency in presentation, debating, decision making and problem solving.  The continents of the world are covered.

Latin II

This second year course is offered as a sequence to the first year course.  The course will continue the study of vocabulary words, sentence structure and increase awareness of how language works.  The second year will include a sampling of poetry from the most popular Latin poets.  Through the poetry the students will increase their understanding of Latin and Roman culture.

Introduction to Visual Arts

This course is a survey of visual arts.  The curriculum is designed to expand basic understanding of the arts and of their importance in our cultural and social development.  Topics may include; painting, drawing, sculpture, and art history.

Introduction to Performing Arts

This course is a survey of the performing arts.  The curriculum is designed to expose students to the basics of both performing and appreciating the arts.  Topics may include acting techniques, chorus, and stage productions.

Introduction to Technology

This course is an introduction to office applications using Microsoft Office XP.  Topics may include Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point and Publisher.

Physical Education

The emphasis in this course is on increased fitness in the areas of cardio vascular endurance, flexibility and agility.  Topics may include team and lifetime sports such as football, floor hockey, softball, baseball, volleyball, tennis, basketball and soccer.
